What is a Sister City?

Definition:

A “sister city” or a “twin town” relationship is a form of legal or social agreement between two geographically and politically distinct localities for the purpose of promoting cultural and commercial ties. Similarities like geography, population, economic needs, and exchanges are solidified through these long-term partnerships. A relationship is officially recognized after the highest elected or appointed official from both communities signs off on an agreement to become sister cities. These relationships are non-political.

What do Sister Cities do?

Each sister city organization is independent and pursues the activities and thematic areas that are important to them and their community, including:

  • Municipal
  • Business
  • Trade
  • Leadership
  • Social
  • Educational
  • Visual Arts
  • Sports
  • Culinary Arts
  • Travel
  • Cultural Exchanges
  • Community Projects

The possibilities are endless!
